How To Modernize Your Business

I sat down with Jason Huber from Huber Window Cleaning to chat about his business challenges and solutions over the years. Here’s are a few nuggets about growth and learning from a successful entrepreneur:
What has your journey been like as an entrepreneur?
My journey is a little bit different than anyone else’s. I came into our family business that my dad started in ‘73. My brother took over the company after my dad decided to retire, roughly 20 years ago. My brother continued to run the company while I was working as a general labourer, but unfortunately, my brother suddenly passed away. So, I took over the company and modernized the business.
How did you modernize the business?
In the past 35 years, there were no webpages and no online advertising. We only used the yellow book because that was all that a business required back then. Since then, we have modernized our business by incorporating a new website, social media advertising, Google Adwords, etc. — and we have grown to three times the size!
What are the most important things to your business?I believe that culture is the most important thing we can create to differentiate a business. I wanted to change the perception of the typical window cleaner. I wanted to make it a career for people who wanted to grow with us. An example of a cultural change is that Huber began profit sharing. This has helped us to build a culture and dedicated long-term team members.
Tell us about your experience with Marketing?
There was not much marketing happening when I took over — we had a listing with the yellow book. The yellow book built us a webpage and created some Google Adwords, and the results were okay, but we were looking for a company that better aligned with our company values. We believe in building relationships with our clients, and Intrigue had the same philosophy. They meet with me on a regular basis and always bring value to our meetings.
What resulted from your relationship with Intrigue?The biggest impact with regards to marketing was when we turned it over to a professional marketing company. Intrigue met with us to understand our needs and built us a custom marketing campaign. They helped us build a stronger brand in Guelph, Kitchener/Waterloo, Cambridge, and the surrounding areas, and this resulted in a serious growth in business and our expansion into Milton.
