It’s 2018 and many of you have made new year resolutions to grow your business. This is a big goal and will require you to spend some time asking tough questions, examining your marketing tools and results, and taking some important steps so you can move forward in achieving your goal.

Here are some of the key questions to ask yourself, your team, and your marketing partners in order to better reach and connect with your audience in 2018:

Behaviour Questions

  • When is the last time you sat down and took a hard look at your marketing?
  • What marketing channels are you using?
  • How would you rate your marketing channels on a scale from 1 – 10?
(1 is equal to your banging your head against the desk and wondering why you use that channel and 10 is that you consider the channel to be an integral part of your business)
  • How is your marketing working for you?
  • What is performing and what is not?
  • Can you relate an increase in _____________ (sales, appointments, meetings booked, inquiries, etc.) to a particular marketing channel?

Authenticity Questions

  • What are you communicating?  (Promotions, new products, educational pieces, etc.)
  • Does the experience that you are communicating to people match the experience they will receive when they buy from you or use your service?
  • What problem are you solving for your customers? Is this problem clearly defined?
  • What questions do your customers, and potential customers, frequently ask before or after the purchase?
  • What do you know that could add value to your clients?
  • Who is the hero of the story that you are telling? *Hint: it should be your product, service, or your client.

Testing Questions

  • Do you update your website and marketing content and test to see which changes get the best results?
  • Do you develop and implement A/B testing to measure your marketing initiatives?
  • Do you use different landing pages to track conversions?
  • Do you examine Google Analytics to see if your particular marketing campaign has moved the needle?
  • Do you set up conversion goals for your marketing campaigns?
  • Do you ask your best customers where they look for information before making a purchase?
  • Have you sat down to review your marketing goals or asked your marketing team or marketing partner to review analytics, KPIs, and goals? How often do you review and measure results?

When I meet with people and ask them many of these questions, I hear the word ‘should’ a lot.

“Yes, I know, I should have done x, y, z.”
“I should look into that next.”

Personally, I have a rule when it comes to ‘should’:

DON’T ‘SHOULD’ ON YOURSELF.

I challenge you to ask the tough questions, take action, and do the work. Remember, marketing is a marathon and not a sprint. It’s important to be patient and calculated when making decisions.
