Look at your calendar. How much time are you spending each week doing the same activities? Are you reaching the same results month-over-month or even year-over-year? Perhaps it’s time to break the cycle and rethink how you can stay on top of your marketing.  Here are four tips on how to stay on top of your marketing in 2018:

  1. Schedule

Is putting out fires and going through your emails the majority of your work day? I recommend using your calendar as a guideline for where you want to spend your time. Stop making excuses, and definitely stop rescheduling. Block out a routine piece of time every week, month, or quarter, to work on the things you value most. If you’re going to make marketing a priority, you need to schedule time for it.

If you’re in business with other partners, schedule meetings with them to occur on a regular basis. You may not need to meet about marketing every week, but regrouping every month or every quarter is a good use of time.

If you’re working with an organization like Intrigue, that’s another great place to start :).

  1. Put yourself in your clients shoes

When was the last time you developed some content that you knew would add value to someone else? Marketing is more than getting someone to perform a desired action. There is so much more you need to do before you get to that. People want to buy from people they like, know, and trust. So that means you need to spend some time to reviewing your best clients. Who are the customers that you enjoying speaking with when the phone rings?

Ask yourself:

  • How did that person, or that organization, come to be such a great client?
  • What was their situation and what value did you bring to them that made them want to work with you?
  • Is there information that you possess that you think your clients want to know?

What content can you create to get your potential clients thinking?

  1. Plan

If you know you’re going to have a sale in April,  then don’t leave the planning for t the promotion until the last week of March. Planning ahead will not only save you from the last minute stress of trying to get something out the door, but it will also help to align your marketing for the year.

If you’re not sure where to start with your plan, we recommend finding a partner with marketing experience to help you get your business noticed. . Whether it’s expanding your marketing team internally, or hiring marketing experts externally, establishing a plan of action is critical if you plan on staying on top of your marketing this year.

  1. Do what you say you’re going to do

A plan is only good if you see it through. We are only human and sometimes we get bogged down with the day-to-day so much that we don’t have time to accomplish the plans that we intended to complete. How many business resolutions have you broken in your lifetime?

It’s important to acknowledge that it’s okay to ask for help. As a business owner, it’s perfectly normal to have a long list of things to accomplish every day — but if the tasks on your list are never getting crossed off and your plans are left incomplete, then it may be time to ask for help.
