In this episode of IM In A Car, Rob Murray talks with Ryan Martin, a Guelph native and the creator of MindCycle, who is cycling across Canada to raise money and awareness for mental health.
Ryan explains what inspired him to cycle across the country and why mental health is so important to him. He shares his story on anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder, and how he deals with it.
Supported by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Ryan Martin started his journey on May 14th in Tofino, British Columbia. He thinks it will take him between three and four months to reach the East Coast — a 9000 km journey!

Ryan Martin is a 23-year-old who was born and raised in Guelph. After studying Business in Waterloo, he began his mission of cycling across Canada to raise awareness for mental health.
Ryan experienced frequent anxiety and episodes of depression in high school, and was subsequently diagnosed with bipolar disorder. After a few years of therapy and medication, Ryan learned how to manage his mental health issues and he opened up about his story to make people feel more comfortable and start talking about mental health.
Ryan believes that once you start talking about the state of your mental health, you can realize what’s going on you, you can seek help, work on finding coping mechanisms, and develop your toolbox.
He wants people to hear his story in the hopes that it will offer some comfort to others experiencing the same situation.
“I’m at a point where I want to open up about my story completely – nothing hidden – so other people will feel more comfortable talking about their story.”
